U-Co Juarez. What happened? It’s been 5 months since the tragedy that shut down U-Co Juarez. A place that was born during the pandemic and closed because of shady real estate business practices.
When we rented the property in 2020, the building was full of potential and dreams. We were ready to build our second community once the dust settled with the Covid shutdowns. All was great, you all loved the open space and the neighborhood. After 3.5 years of building a community on that location, in October 2023, a team of motorcycle riders with a female ‘lawyer’ walked into the delivering bad news, they were taking over the building as it had been sold off. All the furnished items were moved to the street and some of the guests’ electronics were stolen. A nightmare for us all.
After months with lawyers and an investigation, we learned that the property owner had a promissory note that hadn’t been paid over the years. The building had been seized by the government and sold off. The new property owner took their property by force, we believe the corrupt system made it happen. We were out on the street in 30 minutes. This is a common practice that happens around Mexico to buy properties in auction from struggling owners at 10 cents of every dollar.
There was nothing we could do since we couldn’t sue the previous owner as she had nothing to her name and the new property owner took possession of the building ‘legally.’
I wanted to share this with all of you after a few months of grief and loss. Every business has its risks but, we’re happy to have shared so many memories with you all.
