Hey #ucofam,

Mexico’s culture is vibrant, colorful, and full of nuances that make it unique—and that includes the way we speak! If you’ve spent any time here, you’ve probably noticed that certain words carry meanings beyond what you’ll find in a traditional dictionary. The beauty of Mexican slang is that it reflects a laid-back yet expressive approach to life.

Let’s dive into some common Mexican slang, and you'll see what I mean.

Mañana

This one literally means "tomorrow," but in Mexican culture, mañana often implies that something will be done eventually... but not necessarily soon. It embodies a more relaxed attitude toward time.

Luego

Meaning "later," this can be used when you’re not committing to a specific time—kind of like saying, “We’ll do it... at some point.”

Luego luego

Oddly enough, it means "right away"—yes, it's like "later" but immediately. Confusing, but that’s the beauty of it!

Déjame lo pienso

A polite way of saying "no," this phrase translates to "Let me think about it," but often it’s a soft rejection.

Gracias

You’d think this just means "thank you," but context is everything. It can also be used to politely refuse something, like when someone offers you more food at dinner and you’re too full: "Gracias."

Que onda or que pedo

A friendly way to say "what’s up?" or "how’s it going?"

Mexican slang is an art that embodies the essence of the culture: lively, colorful, and full of double meanings. I love seeing how language reflects the way we experience life here.

More Fun Mexican Slang

  • ¡Qué padre! — Cool!

  • Me vale madre — I don't care (literally, "it’s worth a mother" but contextually means you’re indifferent).

  • Poca madre — Can mean something is really cool (though it's a bit vulgar, so use with close friends).

  • Fresa — Preppy or snooty, used to describe someone who’s into luxury.

  • ¡Aguas! — Watch out!

  • Estar crudo — To be hungover.

  • ¡A huevo! — F**k Yeah! (a celebratory expression of agreement or excitement).

  • No manches — No way! (a less vulgar way of saying "Are you kidding me?")

  • Chido — Cool or awesome.

  • Chamba — Job or work.

  • Neta — Truth or honestly. Like saying, "Really?" or "Seriously?"

  • Echarle ganas — To give it your all or make an effort.

  • Chafa — Cheap or low quality.

  • Güey — Dude or guy (used casually, especially among friends).

If you’re in Mexico, give these words a try! It’s a fun way to feel more connected to the local culture and a perfect conversation starter with new friends.

Cheers,

Marco
