Hey U-Co Fam,

As you all know, I packed my life into a couple of suitcases, sold everything, and moved to Mexico to start U-Co. But here’s what you don’t know about me…

I became a minimalist in 2016. I wasn’t a 10-item-only kind of guy (I’m not that extreme), but I would buy only the necessary items for my daily life. I had a rule: if I bought something new, something old had to go. Over the years, I started purchasing black t-shirts to simplify my daily routine. This habit of simplifying my lifestyle helped me focus on my priorities and what I truly wanted in life.

This week at U-Co Roma, the power went out for several hours. One of the street cables caught fire, leaving the whole block in darkness. By the end of the day, the #ucofam was out of power and we sat in the dark, just chatting without distractions. Yes, technology has made us talk to each other less. I know we love our TikTok, but a simple power outage brought us all together without constantly checking our emails. What a concept! At this point, I feel like unplugging the modem at night to make sure everyone talks to each other might increase our community engagement. Just kidding, I’m not going to do that, but it’s a reminder of how we forget what's truly important and the purpose of technology. We’re supposed to use tech to our advantage, but I feel that we are like zombies without our phones.

So, how do we liberate ourselves from these materialistic things that make our lives more complex than they need to be? Here’s what I’ve learned over the years:

  1. Possessions do not make memories, you do.

  2. Material things end up owning you, not the other way around.

  3. A clutter-free home helps with daily decision-making (and cleaning).

  4. If it doesn’t fit in my backpack and a carry-on, I don’t need it.

  5. Digital minimalism is a thing; we all need to unplug more often.

  6. If I haven’t used it in a year, I donate it.

  7. I don’t need extra square meters. They only make me buy more things and clean more.

  8. Cherish how someone makes you feel, not what they are wearing.

  9. Buy what makes YOU happy, not what makes others happy.

  10. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Whether you’re a minimalist or not, do what works for you. We don’t need all this stuff to make us happy. Be grateful for what you have, enjoy the simple things around you, and focus on relationships that build you up. As Mies van der Rohe used to say, "Less is more."

Keep it simple, U-Co Fam.

Accommodations

The best spot for the summer vacation, is Puerto Escondido. If you’re looking for a play to relax and party. I’d recommend my friends at Che Hostels. These guys have been building hostels all over Mexico and their experiences are spot on.
