Hey U-Co Fam,

As I move through business, especially during my fall season, I focus on maintaining what I’ve built. This doesn’t come naturally to me—I’m more inclined to envision, design, and create the new. But over the years, I’ve learned that reflecting on past mistakes is crucial to building something better tomorrow.

If I were to build without pausing, I’d never learn from all of you. That’s why so many startups fail. They grow too fast without letting the dust settle, leaving chaos in their wake.

In my early projects, I lived in a state of constant anxiety. Minimalism isn’t just about getting rid of material things; it’s also about managing feelings, relationships, and projects. I was overwhelmed, and even though I thrive in chaos, I didn’t give myself the physical or mental space to produce excellent work.

My strategy now is slow and steady. I think in decades, adjust quarterly, and step forward daily. To move forward in building a business, I need a clear mind. I can’t focus on the next big thing if I’m still juggling unfinished projects. As Cody Sanchez wisely said, "Clean your room first before you clean the world."

Here’s how I kick off a new project:

Start with Myself (Mind, Body, Soul)

  • Check-In: How do I really feel? Am I in a good place mentally and physically?

  • Health Check: Am I taking care of my body and staying healthy?

  • Excitement Level: Does this new project light a fire in me? Am I genuinely excited about it?

  • Mindset: Am I in the right frame of mind to take this on?

  • Reflection: Have I given this idea enough thought, or is it just a passing whim?

  • Time Investment: Do I realistically have the time and energy to dedicate to this new endeavor?

Clear My Space, Physically and Digitally

  • Physical Declutter: Tidy up my work area to create a clean, distraction-free environment.

  • Digital Detox: Remove unnecessary apps, organize my drive and emails, and clear out excess photos.

  • Close Out the Old: Wrap up and shut down any lingering projects that are no longer serving me.

Prepare for the New

  • Dedicated Workspace: Set up a specific area for this project, free from clutter and distractions.

  • Organized Systems: Create clearly labeled, searchable folders for easy access to everything I need.

  • Team Alignment: Identify who’s on board with me and make sure we’re all on the same page.

If you ever feel burned out, take a step back to regroup. Move forward with a clear mind. You don’t need 20+ tabs open in your browser or your mind.

Cheers,

Marco #ucofam
